Sir Grayson Perry receives £39,000-a-month energy bill

Sir Grayson, 63, is known for his ceramic vases, tapestries and his cross-dressing. The self-described “broadcaster, transvestite, and lecturer” often appears in public as his alter ego “Claire”.

Jon Sopel, who co-hosts the News Agents podcast alongside Emily Maitlis and Lewis Goodall, also claimed his direct debit had been drastically raised – from £152 to £19,274 a month.

Writing on X, the presenter said: “Just had a notification that our monthly standing order is going up from £152 a month to £19,274.

“Seems a bit steep. Is there a human rather than a bot we can talk to? Many thanks and merry Christmas.”

Several disgruntled EDF customers responded to both threads, detailing their own problems with contacting the provider.

One wrote: “The way utility companies have deliberately made themselves so difficult to contact is an absolute disgrace and adds tenfold to the stress of resolving problems.”

Another said: “The only way to get energy companies to respond is to email them with the word ‘ombudsman’ in the title. They’re very responsive all of a sudden once you threaten to escalate.”

Both users prompted responses from an EDF representative, promising to resolve the issue.
