Oak Park in the news:

  1. The Cook County Jail population has fallen below 5,000, a rare occurrence attributed to Illinois’ historic elimination of cash bail in September. The jail currently houses 4,909 detainees, the second-lowest number since the mid-1980s, with experts linking the decrease to quicker releases of defendants who would have previously spent days or weeks awaiting bail. While the drop began before the law took effect, experts speculate that the decline might continue, but uncertainties remain regarding how judges will handle detention without the option of bail. 2. Spencer Walker has been named the new head coach for Fenwick High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team in Oak Park, replacing Joseph Waldorf who resigned for personal reasons. Walker, a 2018 graduate of Lyons Township High School, has an impressive swimming background, holding state records and winning individual state titles. He will be joined by his father, Scott Walker, a highly regarded coach, who will serve as an assistant on the Fenwick staff. (Wednesday Journal)
  3. The reopening of the essential social services agency, Together We Cope, down the road in Tinley Park, is nearing completion after a fire in November 2022 forced its closure. The main building, which houses client services, a food pantry, and a resale shop, has faced delays in reopening due to construction setbacks, including a change of contractors. While repairs continue, the agency is operating temporarily from its administration building, accepting limited donations and providing emergency food assistance through makeshift arrangements until its main space reopens, which is now planned for November.
