Here are the top stories in Oak Park-River Forest today:

1. As part of the Climate Ready Oak Park initiative that began last year, the Oak Park Village Board voted to approve an electrification ordinance which makes all-electric new construction part of the building code, which will take effect in January 2024. With this change, Oak Park becomes the first town in the Midwest to ban fossil fuels in new residential and commercial buildings. The ordinance was one of the steps identified as needed to help the village achieve the goal of having net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050. (Wednesday Journal)

2. An Oak Forest native is currently facing federal gun charges for allegedly trafficking 25 “Glock switches”—devices that can convert handguns to fully automatic machine guns. 20-year-old Anthony Prisco sold 25 machine gun conversion devices, a firearm with a defaced serial number and a 3D printer to an undercover law enforcement officer in June. Because he was on probation for a state gun charge conviction during the time of the sale, he was charged with illegally possessing and transferring machine guns as a convicted felon, and his arraignment is scheduled for this Monday. (FOX 32 Chicago)

3. Ahead of the new school year, the Cook County Clerk’s Office announced extended weekend hours on select Saturdays in August for families seeking to obtain birth certificates to complete their child’s registration for school. These “Back-to-School Birth Certificate Days” will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5, and Saturday, Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Clerk’s Office locations in Markham, Maywood, and downtown Chicago.
