What does it cost the planet to make your favourite film or TV show?
We chat with the experts on the environmental sustainability of the film and TV industry and how South Africa can lead the charge.
Hollywood loves an emotional, environmental message in their films – one of the highest-grossing franchises of all time – James Cameron’s Avatar – is filled to the brim with metaphors for climate change and the human impact on nature. But does Hollywood walk the talk?
According to the Studio Sustainability Standard in 2022, the average big film production generated about 2 840 tonnes of carbon emissions – the same as taking 11 trips to the moon. The Sustainable Production Alliance reported in 2021 that one day of filming averaged 33 metric tonnes of carbon emissions. If you think about the 191 days of strikes in Hollywood, that would have been a reduction of over 6 000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions.
