CANTON − Howmet Aerospace plans to add more than 40 jobs at its Warner Road SE facility as it adds a new manufacturing line for its titanium products.
The Pennsylvania-based company, which is a global producer of titanium aerospace products, plans to invest $5 million in equipment at its facility at 1935 Warner Road SE. Canton City Economic Development Director Christopher Hardesty said the new equipment will allow Howmet to expand and create 43 new jobs with nearly $3 million in new payroll.
“This isn’t a physical expansion where they’re adding 100,000 square feet (to the facility), it’s a machinery and equipment expansion,” Hardesty said. “They are bringing new machinery and equipment down to add a new line of manufacturing for their titanium products for aerospace.”
Canton City Council on Monday unanimously agreed to help the company, formerly known as Arconic and RMI Titanium. Council approved a five-year job creation tax incentive agreement where the city will grant back to Howmet 50% of the company’s new payroll withholdings per year.
Hardesty said the incentive applies to only the payroll generated by the new jobs and does not affect the company’s existing 122 jobs at the site, which makes and distributes titanium and specialty mill products, extruded shapes and engineered systems for the aerospace, industrial and consumer industries.
He said the incentive is estimated to generate at least $143,000 for Howmet’s project over five years.
Rob Morrison, communications director for Howmet Aerospace, wrote in an email that the expansion is exciting for the company.
“It’s a privilege to be able to operate and grow our business here in Canton,” Morrison wrote. “We’re proud to provide employment opportunities and, through the Howmet Aerospace Foundation, contribute to STEM, technical education and workforce development initiatives throughout the community.”
Howmet also owns a plant at 208 15th St. SW, which processes titanium for melt operations. (Information was corrected at 4 p.m. Nov. 14 to fix an error. See correction below.)
