A reduction in shipments during the third quarter of 2023 (Q3 2023) continues to grow the concern for the global PC market. According to a report by IDC, with 68.2 million PCs shipped in Q3 2023, the global volumes of shipments have declined 7.6% year over year. Even with the demand and the global economy remaining restricted, the PC market was able to increase shipments in each of the last two quarters. This slowed down the rate of annual decline and indicated that the market had moved on from its worst situation.
In the past few months, the PC inventory has become leaner and is near healthy levels in most channels, the report notes. However, the downward pricing pressure continues and is expected to remain an issue within the consumer and business sectors.
Most of the top 5 vendors experienced double-digit declines during the quarter. Apple’s decline was majorly responsible for the unfavourable year-over-year comparisons as the company recovered from a COVID-related halt in production during Q3 2022. Meanwhile, HP’s growth was largely due to the normalising of inventory.
How generative AI can help the PC industry
However, there might be a silver lining for the PC market. Linn Huang, research VP of Devices & Displays at IDC, said: “Generative AI could be a watershed moment for the PC industry. While use cases have yet to be fully articulated, interest in the category is already strong. AI PCs promise organisations the ability to personalise the user experience at a deeper level all while being able to preserve data privacy and sovereignty. As more of these devices launch next year, we expect a significant boost to overall selling prices.”
