LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Girls in Kentucky will get a chance to see what a career in the skies looks like.
Kentucky’s Bluegrass Chapter of Women in Aviation International will be hosting the group’s annual Girls in Aviation Day at Bowman Field on Saturday, Sept. 23, from noon to 4 p.m. The event is free.
Girls ages eight to 18 will learn about aviation, explore airplanes on display and speak with women in the aviation and aerospace industries. There also will be hands-on activities like flying a drone or trying out the airplane simulator.
More than 300 girls are expected to attend.
In addition, there will be booths set up from airlines, carriers, and organizations to give the young girls an idea of the different careers in the industry.
“We’re gonna have about 20 different aviation-themed booths that they can come to, and each booth will have an activity for them to partake in,” said Crystal Korff, a UPS pilot and a member of the Women in Aviation Bluegrass Chapter. “And then we’ll also have about six airplanes that they can sit in, a simulator that they can fly and some drones to fly as well. We’ll have food trucks, so come out and get some food. We’ll have a DJ, so it’s a nice fun environment.”
And the event isn’t just for girls — boys and families are also invited to learn about aviation.
“Basically, we want to just reach out to them and let them know that there are so many different opportunities to have an aviation career and a lot of girls don’t know that,” Korff said.
“It’s a wonderful career. It’s the best career. I mean, it’s the only thing I know how to do. So it’s wonderful, and yeah, I have such a passion for it. I always have, ever since I got in that first little airplane when I was 10. So this event is great because it helps us be able to show that passion to other kids.”
The Bluegrass Chapter of Women In Aviation will also be awarding three scholarships on Saturday.
