Workers at Foxconn Industrial Internet, a subsidiary of Foxconn Technology Group, have been manufacturing microinverters for Enphase Energy at their campus in Mount Pleasant. Although no additional jobs were created as a result of the deal, several hundred Foxconn employees worked on the project.
Enphase Energy reported in its second-quarter report that approximately 50,000 units were shipped by these two US contract manufacturers, resulting in a net IRA benefit of $1.6 million. A video posted by Enphase Energy showcases Foxconn workers manufacturing the microinverters at their multipurpose building in Mount Pleasant.
Foxconn was one of two manufacturers commissioned to produce microinverters, with the other manufacturer being Flex in Columbia, South Carolina. The contract details between Foxconn and Enphase Energy remain unclear in terms of quantity and duration.
Microinverters play a crucial role in solar technology by converting the energy collected from solar panels into usable power. Enphase Energy expressed its enthusiasm about the manufacturing partnership, stating that it aligns with their commitment to advancing the clean energy economy and contributing to business growth.
For Foxconn, the creation of jobs is critical due to the company receiving state tax credits for meeting hiring and capital investment benchmarks. By the end of 2025, Foxconn aims to have up to 1,454 employees, compared to its previous promise of 13,000 full-time employees. Meeting hiring requirements under the revised contract with the state in the last two years has allowed Foxconn to benefit from tax credits.
This collaboration with Enphase Energy marks Foxconn’s ongoing involvement in renewable energy initiatives. In addition to the microinverters project, Foxconn partnered with We Energies in March for a solar farm on its property.
While Foxconn’s chairman, Young Liu, has mentioned the development of new energy industries in Ohio and Wisconsin, including batteries, there is no indication of battery technology being pursued in Mount Pleasant.
Overall, this manufacturing arrangement between Foxconn and Enphase Energy reflects their commitment to clean energy, job creation, and meeting customer demand in the United States.
