Diablo 4 S1 and Pikmin 4 Are the Barbieheimer of Video Games

Highlights

  • Pikmin 4 and Diablo 4 season 1, though completely different, released a day apart, providing unique entertainment experiences for gamers.
  • Pikmin 4 offers a colorful, family-friendly puzzle-solving adventure, while Diablo 4 delves into dark, gory, and brutal storytelling.
  • The release of these games mirrors the release of the movies Barbie and Oppenheimer, showcasing the broader entertainment industry’s ability to offer diverse experiences in a single weekend.

After months of memes across the internet, moviegoers were finally able to check out the highly anticipated Barbie and Oppenheimer. This Barbieheimer weekend treated viewers to two films that share almost nothing in common, and it seems to have been worth the wait. While everyone’s focus seemed to be on those unique titles, the video game industry was going through the same thing with the release of Pikmin 4 and Diablo 4 season one.

Pikmin 4 and Diablo 4 are completely different experiences, but they both released within a day of each other. As moviegoers checked out Barbieheimer, gamers were able to experience tonal whiplash throughout the weekend. It is not often that two vastly different entertainment products launch on the same day, and it is even more unlikely that it happens twice in the same weekend across the broader entertainment industry.

Diablo 4 and Pikmin 4 Could Not Be More Different

Four Pikmin Standing Together In A Row

After a 10-year wait, Pikmin fans were finally able to get their hands on the next chapter of this colorful franchise. They were once again thrust into a miniature world filled with cute Pikmin and tasked with saving people that crash-landed on the planet. It has taken everything fans have loved about the franchise and improved upon it. Nintendo has also thrown in a couple of brand-new features that have really helped reinvent this iconic series.

A day before Pikmin 4 hit store shelves, Blizzard launched Diablo 4‘s Season of the Malignant. While many of the changes were controversial, the new mechanics helped breathe new life into Sanctuary. Players everywhere returned to the grim dark fantasy world of Diablo for another dreary adventure. The Malignant helped make Sanctuary scarier and darker, and the new stories cemented the brutality of this world. It is just the first of many seasons to come, and each season will likely make this world seem even worse.

While Pikmin 4 goes for a colorful puzzle-solving feel, Diablo 4 leans extremely hard into the M rating territory. Blood flows through the world, characters are dismembered constantly, and everything about Sanctuary seems horrible. The story is fantastic, but it is also not for the faint of heart. Those looking for a more family-friendly experience should probably stick with Pikmin 4, but anyone looking for something gory and dark will definitely feel right at home in Diablo 4‘s world.

The release of Pikmin 4 and Diablo 4 within 24 hours of each other is very similar to what the movie industry just did with Barbie and Oppenheimer. Barbie is a colorful family-friendly comedy that will leave viewers thinking long after they have left the theater, while Oppenheimer is an R-rated biopic about the creation of the atomic bomb that was used at the end of World War 2. These two films share nothing in common with each other, but they were both released on the same day. This created countless memes and theaters everywhere offered double-feature events known as Barbieheimer. It is not every day that two vastly different products release on the same day, but it seems to have paid off immensely for the weekend box office.

It is just a coincidence that the video game industry and film industry did the same thing over the weekend. These vastly different titles have made these last couple of days fascinating and have given fans so much content to talk about across the internet. Things like this do not happen often, but this wild weekend seems to have been worth the wait for many.

Diablo 4 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
