Waves Fall to Santa Clara in Game Two

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team dropped 7-4 to Santa Clara in the second game of the West Coast Conference series on Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
 
The Waves (15-24, 7-13) and Broncos (22-15, 9-8) were tied 2-all after the second inning, but Santa Clara scored three more runs in the next two innings and held Pepperdine scoreless after the fourth inning to collect the series win.

  • Freshman designated hitter Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) was 3-for-4 on the day and had two RBI.
  • Senior catcher Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) had the only double for the Waves.

 
GAME RECAP
 
The Broncos jumped out front first in the top of the first inning scoring two runs on three hits to take a 2-0 lead. The Waves answered and tied the game 2-all in the bottom of the second inning after a ground ball RBI by Jack Basseer and a single up the middle by Jack Goodman (Medfield, Mass./Medfield HS. In the top of the third inning, Santa Clara went ahead again scoring two runs on three hits to make it 4-2.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, the Broncos hit a solo homer to make the deficit three at 5-2. The Waves got within one in the bottom of the fourth inning after taking advantage of a Santa Clara error and wild pitch and a single to left center by Basseer, 5-4.
 
Both squads were scoreless in the next four innings, until the Broncos brought in two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to make it 7-4. The Waves were unable to piece something together in the bottom half of the ninth, as they were retired in order.
 
UP NEXT
 
Pepperdine and Santa Clara will match up for the series finale on Sunday, April 30 with first pitch at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
