Here are the top three stories today in Oak Park-River Forest:
- As part of the Chicago Park District’s citywide “Pickleball Mania” program — which has a goal of establishing 50 pickleball courts across Chicago by 2025 — nearby McKinley Park could soon get 10 pickleball courts installed. Some neighbors aren’t happy about the proposed plan, which would necessitate existing tennis courts being removed to make room and would contribute to increased noise in the residential area. Alderman Julia Ramirez, whose ward includes McKinley Park, is supporting an alternative proposal to put the pickleball courts at a different end of the park. The timeline for completion and final plans have yet to be determined. (Block Club Chicago)
- Common Pantry, which serves local residents struggling with food insecurity, opened a new facility on Lincoln Avenue in North Center on Thursday. The 56-year-old organization opened the new space following a skyrocketing need for their services and secured necessary funding through state grants, contributions from the community, and input from guests. Common Pantry served around 300 households just before the pandemic but now serves nearly 900 households. (WLS-TV)
- On Thursday, Amazon workers staged a rally down the street in Humboldt Park for better benefits. The demonstrators were urging Amazon to commit to six percent local hiring and to increase the minimum wage to $28.50. Amazon has not yet responded to demonstrators’ demands. (Fox 32)
